It takes an incredible amount of dedication and resilience to perform on the stage of America’s Got Talent, but comedian Barry Brewer took that commitment to an entirely new level. Stepping out onto the stage with a major disadvantage, Barry was using crutches due to a freshly torn Achilles tendon from a basketball game. Rather than letting the injury derail his lifelong dream, the South Side Chicago native adjusted his act from standard stand-up comedy to what he hilariously dubbed a “sit-down comedy” routine, combining his sharp wit with a keyboard.
Barry immediately won over the audience and judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Sofia Vergara, and Howie Mandel with his immense charm and positive attitude. He began his set by talking about the awkward lack of empathy he experienced while traveling on a plane with crutches, joking about a woman who gripped her purse tightly as he boarded. “Where am I going to go?” Barry asked the roaring crowd. “You think I’m going to steal your purse and go sit in seat 32C?”

The highlight of the entire audition came when Barry sat behind his keyboard to showcase his musical comedy roots. Having grown up playing the drums and keyboard in various churches, he delivered a brilliant, side-splitting breakdown of the cultural differences between musical styles in different congregations. He masterfully demonstrated the gentle, straightforward piano chords used during a traditional white church sermon, before completely shifting gears into a high-energy, soulful, and dramatic black church arrangement.
Barry’s flawless piano playing, incredible facial expressions, and high-octane energy had the judges and the entire auditorium crying with laughter. He perfectly captured the roaring passion of a gospel preacher, earning a massive standing ovation from the crowd. Proving that true talent can never be held down by a physical injury, Barry Brewer walked away with a unanimous sweep of enthusiastic “yeses,” cementing his place as one of the most memorable and versatile comics of the season.
